The breathtaking Blue Ridge and Appalachian mountains provide a natural backdrop to the town of Asheville, North Carolina, and its many charms. The perfect combination of Asheville’s stunning location and its bountiful restaurants have helped the city attract more people than ever. Pack your granola and hiking shoes, and discover the highlights of the “Land of the Sky.”

Where to Stay

When we visited Ashville, we picked a reasonably priced hotel in a great location, the Asheville Westgate County Inn & Suites.  Their shuttle service takes you to specific drop-off points located around the vibrant downtown area, allowing you more time to eat and peruse the shelves of unique shops. The Biltmore Estate is only nine minutes from the hotel and offers guided tours and striking views.

Asheville Hotel's Indoor Pool

Some of the best things about this hotel is all the things that are included.  Enjoy a complimentary hot breakfast, free parking, free shuttle service to downtown,  free high-speed internet, and a heated indoor pool.

Craft Beer

The Convention and Visitors Bureau names Asheville as having more craft breweries per capita than any city in the U.S., which means Asheville could expect an influx of even more thirsty tourists. Are you one of them? I know we are! Here are some of our favorite breweries.

Wicked Weed Brewing is the brainchild of brothers Luke and Walt Dickinson, who opened their brewpub in December 2012, and things basically blew up.  They focus in two areas: hoppy beers, a favorite of beer enthusiasts, and sour beers. Stop by the brewpub and try a few of the 29 beers on tap.

Fonta Flora Brewery sits on the historic Whippoorwill 49-acre dairy farm and is the first true farmhouse brewery in North Carolina. The three-man team behind this brewery are mad scientists when it comes to incorporating ingredients from the Carolina wilderness that surrounds their bus stop-turned-brewpub. They are constantly pushing boundaries with weird, defiantly tasty brews (carrot IPAs, fig saisons, imperial stouts laced with black walnut).ashville

Burial is what started as a fledgling one-barrel brewery in a dilapidated warehouse and has now evolved into one of Asheville’s most impressive and forward-thinking breweries. After just a year in business, Seattle transplants Jess and Doug Reiser, along with brewer Tim Gormley, expanded to a 10-barrel brewhouse. They serve beers that lean heavy toward Belgian traditions—farmhouse saisons, crisp blonde ales, and intense dubbels—while incorporating local ingredients like wildflower honey and North Carolina sweet potatoes.

Hi-Wire strives to be as independent and authentic as possible, while maintaining an approachability to their beers.  Located in Downtown Asheville’s Brew District, Hi-Wire Brewing embraces its craft from top to bottom – from its highly drinkable, hand-crafted brews to its artwork, hand-drawn by a local artist. Their light-hearted circus theme embodies the fun, authenticity, and creativity of this deep-rooted craft.

What to Eat

Asheville is all about local, farm to table restaurants. Sure, the ingredients are local, but the chefs aren’t. Chefs from all over—Brooklyn, Spain, India—are creating a world-class food scene in this small North Carolina town.

Make sure to try Table, the eight-year-old restaurant, who was into local, long before local was the trend. Table is committed to supporting, celebrating, and showcasing regional and sustainable agriculture. The Table team fosters long-standing relationships with farmers and purveyors in Western NC and throughout the Southeast.

The bakery, Farm and Sparrow, uses heirloom grains native to North Carolina and they also mill their own flour. Their rustic pastries are hand-made by a dedicated team and baked in a wood fired oven.

Cúrate is a celebration of traditional Spanish cuisine. If you have ever visited Spain, Cúrate’s menu will transport you back to the country of flamenco, olives, almonds, and sherry. If you’ve never been to Spain, Cúrate will introduce you to the country’s lively tapas bar tradition of small plate dining on foods flavored with a touch of sherry, or perhaps a smoky paprika, and always the choicest olive oil.
